Important Dates for Kindergarten Parents

Hello to all the new kindergartners starting at Buckman this fall! School starts next week, but there are a few things happening before The Big Day to get everyone (including parents!) ready for the start of the school year. As always, it is a good idea to subscribe to the school calendar feed to stay informed about school events (hit “Add” at the bottom of the calendar on this site and select your calendar of choice).

All entering kindergartners should have received notification of their classroom assignment, as well as a designated day/time for a brief assessment. If you have not received this information, be sure to contact the Buckman office as soon as possible. Student meeting times are between Monday and Wednesday of next week!

Don’t miss the Kindergarten Playdate/Meet-Up this Thursday, August 25 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm on the upper playground. This is the chance for kids to familiarize themselves with Buckman and meet other children who will also be entering kindergarten. Fun and informal!

On Tuesday, August 30th, Kindergartners and their families are invited to the Kindergarten Welcome Picnic from 5:30-7:00 on the lower playground. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy getting to know other families. Popsicles will be provided!

And lastly, the official FIRST DAY for incoming kindergartners is Thursday, September 1. After drop-off, parents are invited to join the PTA and school principal for coffee and snacks.

We hope this year is a great one for the newest members of our Buckman family!

 

PTA Clothing Center Volunteers Needed

lost_and_found-612x300Buckman’s day to volunteer at the PPS Clothing Center is this Thursday from 9:30-1:30. We need your help! Without enough volunteers families will be turned away from the opportunity to shop for clothes for their children. Many families take off work and travel long distances on public transportation to get to the clothing center. We would hate for anyone to be turned away!

This is a wonderful way to help families and children in our community.

Planning for our biggest fundraiser of the year is already underway, and the Buckman Auction team is looking for fantastic donations from our community. Think big! EastBurn Gives Back to Buckman

The EastBurn restaurant had started a benefit program for Buckman Elementary as part of their neighborhood involvement. And we all need to spread the word! Whenever someone dines at EastBurn and fills in the Buckman Elementary phone number on their guest receipt, EastBurn will donate 5% of the monthly total of receipts. They will track this using their EastBurn VIP points program and all guests are welcome to accumulate points for their own VIP account, as well as include the Buckman Elementary account for their visit. In December, 2015, Buckman Elementary supporters raised $43 for the school by dining at EastBurn. The restaurant plans to continue this promotion for all of 2016 and hopes to make a significant contribution.

Buckman is open to students in the Portland Public Schools district. We are both a neighborhood school and open to students outside the neighborhood through the PPS School Choice lottery process.

Application Process for Non-Neighborhood Families

To apply for admission to Buckman from outside the neighborhood, you are welcome to attend a school tour and then fill out the proper transfer application forms required by Portland Public Schools.

Visit the Buckman School main website for the schedule of tours for families who live outside the Buckman neighborhood.

In addition to attending a tour, you will need to complete a School Choice Application and submit it to the PPS Enrollment & Transfer Center.

The School Choice Application period begins mid-February each year and applications must be received by Portland Public Schools in early March (see the above link for specific dates) in order to be included in the lottery. More information about the transfer and school choice process is available via the links above.

Students living in the Buckman neighborhood, as defined by Portland Public Schools, do not need to fill out a School Choice Application, but they must contact the Buckman office to indicate their intention to attend Buckman. They are also encouraged to attend the “Ready Set Connect” Open house.

Buckman Elementary will celebrate its 28th annual auction at the Hinson Baptist Church. Mark your calendars for a night of live music, food, drink, and supporting the outstanding arts programs at our school. As Buckman’s biggest fundraiser, the annual auction funds arts program teachers, including dance, visual arts, instrumental music, choir, and other essential opportunities for our kids. Ticket sales will start the 1st of the new year, and child care will be available at the venue.bowie

  • The evening starts with a silent auction; some of our favorite items included acting lessons, a year’s worth of Voodoo Donuts; outings at Kells Irish Pub; date nights with food, Doug Fir tickets, and overnight at the Jupiter; and party packs for Commons Brewery, Basecamp, and WineBuys.
  • Expect some great local cocktail and beer samplings, paired with an hors d’ouvres styled feast of cheese, wine, bread, fruits, and luscious deserts.
  • A live auction will include awesome art produced by YOUR KIDS. Our favorites last year; a beautiful Portland paper 3d skyline; a color mosaic portrait of the late David Bowie made while listening to the White Knight himself; and glass fused art of the four seasons. And the golden auction item: VIP Pickathon tickets.
