Announcing new principal at Buckman,Teresa Chan Seidel

Dear Buckman Community,

I am pleased to announce that Teresa Chan Seidel will be the new principal at Buckman Elementary School. Teresa is a highly decorated educator who in 2013-14 won the prestigious Milken Educator Award.

She succeeds Susan Kosmala, who served as Buckman principal the last four years. We thank Susan for her hard work and wish her the best at Jackson Middle School, where she will serve as principal.

Teresa is the daughter of immigrants and is dedicated to closing the opportunity gap for students who have been historically underserved. Her work at Robert Gray Middle School, where she taught math with an approach that incorporated and celebrated students’ varied backgrounds, earned her the Milken Award.

For the last four years, Teresa served as assistant principal at Laurelhurst K-8 School. She developed and facilitated the Student Intervention, Equity, and the School Climate teams. She also formed Laurelhurst’s first Queer Straight Alliance and student racial affinity groups. While at Laurelhurst, she led the development and implementation of an advisory program, aimed to bridge the K-5 and 6-8 programs, offer intervention for students who were performing below benchmark, and provide a time within the daily schedule to teach social-emotional skills.

Teresa started her education career as a teacher in Eugene before joining Portland Public Schools in 2008 as a math and science teacher at Robert Gray and George middle schools. She is a proud graduate of PPS herself, and excited to be at Buckman, a mere mile away from her high school alma mater, Benson.

During her time as a PPS teacher, Teresa took on leadership roles as a Talented & Gifted and professional development coordinator, and was a team leader for equity, math and school climate.

Teresa is a graduate of the University of Oregon, where she earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education. She earned her administrative credential from Portland State University.

We will introduce Teresa to the community at a meet-and-greet on Monday, July 15, at 6:00 p.m. in the Buckman library. Please join us in welcoming Principal Seidel to Buckman Elementary School.
